review in Spanish, analysis, opinion and more

Two years it has taken Apple to renew one of the most interesting watches in its catalog: the Apple Watch SE. This "special edition", let's remember, arrived in 2020 as a cheaper alternative to the Apple Watch Series 6, maintaining exactly the same appearance, but without some key features. Among them, the screen always on, the electrocardiogram or the blood oxygen sensor.

Since then, this model It has become the most important option to consider for most users.. And the goal of the Cupertino company is to continue to be so. To do this, however, it is necessary to update some areas that after so long may have been somewhat outdated, and this is where the second generation of the Apple Watch SE.

Interestingly, before Apple announced this model, and as a result of the possible rumors about its launch at the traditional September event, I began to reflect and project all the improvements that I thought were going to come with respect to its predecessor. I thought, specifically, of three possible novelties.

  • A new design: with smaller frames, just like the Apple Watch Series 8.
  • The inclusion of the always-on display: feature present since the Apple Watch Series 5.
  • A more powerful processor: to put aside the S5 chip from two years ago.

Of these, only one has come true completely: the improvement in performance thanks to a new processor. It was, of course, the most obvious change. A way not only to make the clock faster on a day-to-day basis, but also to ensure better aging. Now, is this main improvement enough to continue being the most recommended option? Are there other changes that make it worth opting for this Apple Watch over another model?

What has changed?

Apple Watch SE 2022

The main novelty of the Apple Watch SE, I repeat, is the new processor. Apple, specifically, has opted for a s8 chip, the same that includes the Apple Watch Series 8 and the Apple Watch Ultra. This allows the new Watch SE be 20% faster compared to the first generation model. Now, do you notice the difference?

Compared to the S5 chip in my Apple Watch Series 5 — same SoC as the 2022 Apple Watch SE — there is a slight improvement in performance. Everything works much more smoothly and responses are considerably faster. I have never noticed cuts in my Series 5, but I have noticed a slight delay when, for example, opening an application or even accessing some section of the system, such as the apps menu. In this case, all actions are instant.

Another of the most important changes of the Apple Watch SE we see in the design. And yes, it is exactly the same format as the 2022. It is sold in the same sizes – you can choose between a 40 or 44 mm case –, the case is made of the same material (aluminum), the diagonal of the screen remains intact and the frames on the front have not been reduced one millimeter. So where is the change?

Apple Watch SE 2022

The first of them are the new colors. The Apple Watch SE is available in three finishes: Midnight, a sort of blue-black that is extremely pretty in my opinion; Silver, the classic Apple gray color; and Blanco Estrella, a very slightly pink tone.

The second change we see on the back of the watch. The back cover is now made from a recycled material and through a process that reduces your carbon footprint by more than 80%.

This is, of course, good news considering Apple's environmental plans. On an aesthetic level, however, the only thing the user will find is a matte finish on the back. Therefore, except for the colors, the 2022 Apple Watch SE is identical to the first generation.

Save your life in case of an accident

Apple, on the other hand, has also included some new features that weren't present on the Apple Watch SE. One of them is the accident detection.

How? Through new sensors and components: a three-axis gyroscope, a “high g-force” accelerometer, the microphone, the barometer, and the GPS. With this, the watch is able to detect if the user who is wearing it has suffered a collision and activate the emergency mode automatically.

When this happens, a warning is displayed on the screen and allows you to quickly call emergencies. In fact, it even does it automatically after a few seconds if it doesn't detect interaction on the screen.

How is it different from the Apple Watch Series 8?

Apple Watch SE

The 2022 Apple Watch SE has some differences compared to the new Apple Watch Series 8. Starting with one of the most important: appearance. The economic version of the watch maintains the same front as two years ago, with frames that are not as small as those of the Series 8 and, therefore, a screen that is not as large. The panel, yes, is just as bright, with 1,000 nits; more than enough to be able to view the content even in broad daylight.

And speaking of the screen: the second generation Apple Watch SE does not have Always-On Display, the function that makes the sphere always visible. This, in fact, is something that I have missed in this version, since it not only gives it a more interesting aesthetic touch, but also allows you to easily see the time without having to move your wrist for the screen to turn on.

The 2022 Watch SE is also missing certain health-related features. Unlike the Series 8, we don't have an EKG. Neither blood oxygen meter nor the new temperature sensor. It maintains, yes, the heart rate sensor and other interesting options. Among them, the possibility of measuring sleep and, of course, the different training modes.

On the other hand, the Apple Watch SE does not have some functions and some additional sensors that we do see in the Series 8. For example, the U1 chip, to be able to accurately locate with other Apple devices or those from third-party manufacturers that have the same component.

They share, yes, many characteristics. Among them, as I mentioned: the processor. They also have the same battery, which Apple claims is up to 18 hours. It is, in my opinion, a correct duration for day to day. In fact, with the Watch SE I have managed to arrive late at night with approximately 40% autonomy. Enough to be able to measure sleep at night, but taking into account that, in order to continue with it during the day, I have to charge it as soon as I get up.

Do I buy the Apple Watch SE?

Apple Watch SE

The 2022 Apple Watch SE is part of the €299 in its most compact version, while the LTE variant is available from 349 euros. They are, specifically, 200 euros less compared to the Apple Watch Series 8. Now, is this a product to consider?

It is clear that the new Apple Watch SE is just a slight update compared to the first generation model. Small but, yes, necessary to continue being the most recommended option for most users.

This model is perfect for those looking for an Apple Watch for everyday use and not so focused on advanced health monitoring –that is, those that do not need elements such as the ECG, the blood oxygen meter, etc.–.

That, however, does not mean that this watch sets aside options to monitor exercises or certain basic sensors related to health. In this sense, the Apple Watch SE does allow you to monitor your workouts, control your heart rate, evaluate how well or poorly you have slept each night, etc. Namely: the sporty and healthy vocation remains intact in this model. You simply have fewer sensors.

The Apple Watch SE, on the other hand, has a good autonomy, a screen with a high brightness, excellent performance and a design that, although not as refined as the Series 8, leaves no one indifferent.

So, if you're looking for a beautiful, powerful and multi-functional sports or health watch but you're on a tighter budget and don't mind sacrificing on a few options, this Apple Watch SE is for you.

If, on the other hand, you prioritize health and fitness functions, and prefer to have a slightly more attractive design thanks to the reduction of frames and the always-on screen, it will be best to opt for the Apple Watch Series 8.
